It feels like we haven’t had a week all summer that wasn’t punctuated by a chemo session, unanticipated hospital visit, daytrip to New Jersey, power outage, Internet outage, or holiday, but we seem to be halfway through one now.

Martha still looks like she’s had the polka-dot jersey from the Tour de France tattoed on her skin from neck to her knees, but the itching that was driving her to tears last week has diminished to the point that it’s merely annoying now. Some of the suggestions she got from 50K readers, like menthol spray and hot showers, helped her stay sane during the worst days, so we’re both grateful for that.

Late next week we’re heading out to California for a short vacation, and we really hope the chemo side-effects continue to dissipate between now and then. When we get home, the first of 33 radiation treatments awaits. At least there won’t be any needles involved!

Friends of ours will be house-sitting for us while we’re away, and they’ll need to use the villa as a bedroom for their teenaged daughter. So our fingers are crossed that some or all of our remaining Spies head home during the next week, either to applicants already in the Homeward Trails pipeline or to adopters we meet at an event this weekend. Whichever Spies don’t find homes before we leave will spend our vacation at another HT foster home.

In the meantime, our three secret agents are enjoying the time they spend romping and rassling outside the villa during the mornings and evenings. They’re fast and strong now and have clearly mastered the terrain.

It now takes three seconds for April Dancer to reappear on the peninsula countertop after I pluck her from it and lower her to the floor.

Galore recently snared a passing fly out of mid-air and pinned it to the rug.

Ilya loves to race to the glass doors, leap, and ninja-bounce his paw pads against the panes.

But what has really struck us recently is how social the Spies have become since their mom and a few of their siblings went home. They now rank with Oggi and Gigi on the peep-affection scale – and that’s saying something.

Whoever adopts one or more of these three will be adding a purring, face-nuzzling best buddy to their family.
