Kittenado

I drove Martha to the airport on Friday afternoon and got e-mail from her yesterday confirming she’d checked into her hotel in Uganda. We managed to Skype briefly yesterday and today over her intermittent Internet connection. Since she left it’s been a bit of a kitten whirlwind here.

Saturday morning I cleaned the villa, preparing for a visit from a potential adopter for Hope. Naturally, the woman was swarmed by Farrah and Ursula as she sat on the futon, but Hope held her own in the purring and playfulness department, and after half an hour she had sealed the deal.

The woman had adopted two female, medium-haired, polydactyl (extra toes), orange tabby siblings from Homeward Trails in July, and within weeks one of them had succumbed to FIP – the rare but lethal viral mutation that killed our foster kitten Thor last year. So now she was looking for a feline companion for her surviving kitten Zelda. Based on our discussion, it sounds like a good fit.

Sunday afternoon the family adopting Farrah and Ursula came by to finalize the adoption and take them home.

Mom and Dad read the contracts and got my standard briefing while the boy and girl played with Angels, who soon managed to steal the Cat Dancer toy and entertain themselves with it.

After saying goodbye to Farrah and Ursula (who scored a great home), I outfitted the bunkhouse and transferred Hope upstairs. Then I raced off to pick up four new arrivals from the same Wetzel, WV shelter that sent us the Angels. This foursome had come in on the Saturday transport and spent the night in shelter cages at the Homeward Trails office. I brought them home and released them in the villa, which they immediately began exploring.

Then it was off to a neighborhood party that turned out to be a dark house with no one home. Not sure what happened with that. Back at 50K, I exiled the staff cats from the playground and let Hope out. She raced around and had a great time. Last night she curled up beside me in various positions while I slept, always close enough for me to hear her purring. Turns out she’s every bit as much of a peep cat as her siblings.

Today I’ve let her wander the whole upstairs while I’m at my desk, and she clearly likes to be in whatever zone I occupy. Reggie seems indifferent to her, but Yogi and Mia have both hissed, drawing hisses in return. Hope’s adopter is coming to take her home on Saturday. By that time I’ll probably be sad to see my new roommate go.

And that leaves our newcomers, who checked in with unusable names. “Kat” is a male gray tabby with white legs and darker fur.

“Farrah” (I’m not kidding) is a female calico with slightly diluted coloring.

“Kit” is a cute female gray tabby with lighter coloring.

And “Kate” is a black female with a white snowflake on her sternum.

Like the Angels, these kittens are big, social, and seemingly healthy (though Kate for sure has diarrhea, which convinced me to put them all on Metronidazole.) Unlike the Angels, they’re not locked onto the litterbox yet; I found several ounces of pee in the plastic weigh-in bin on top of the dresser (with no spillage!) and another urine sample pooled in the blue rectangular bed. So I have some reprogramming to do.

Because they don’t look related (except maybe for Kit and Kat), I’m calling this posse the Potluck kittens. And since we’ve already fostered a Farrah, a Kate, and a Kitkat, I need four new names. Suggestions welcomed!
