Snow Business

Tuesday
1/12/2016

On Dec 29, we handed Merlin and Alvin off to the Homeward Trails cat manager, who passed them along to another HT foster home. Then we cleaned 50K for two days, turned it over to our petsitter, and flew out to Albuquerque on New Year’s Eve.

During our eight days out west, only one ski area in the country (Colorado’s Wolf Creek Pass) had a deeper base of snow than the one we found at Ski Santa Fe. We parked on the mountainous access road and snowshoed in the Santa Fe National Forest during yet another snowfall.

After two nights with friends in Santa Fe, we drove a few hours north to Durango, Colorado. We’d passed through Durango last summer and were impressed by the awesome San Juan Mountains and the town’s setting astride the beautiful Animas River.

From Durango, it’s an easy drive to high-elevation trailheads near Molas Pass…

…where the snowfields and vistas seem endless.

We also enjoyed exploring Durango’s neighborhoods and woodsy residential developments. Who knew that a town of 17,000 could support seven micro-breweries?

Then it was back to Santa Fe for our last three nights, with margaritas, enchiladas, and yep -- 21 more inches of snowfall in the mountains.

And now that we’ve been home for a few days, we’re getting ready for the year’s first furballs.
