Eating to the Beat

Sunday
5/23/2010

It’s been a week since we said goodbye to the Moochers and hello to the Reggae-Rats. We got daily updates all week from Minnie’s family, which we really appreciated because we were concerned about how Min was adjusting. She had a couple of litter-box mishaps at first, but a change in litter appeared to solve that problem. It sounds like the kittens have adjusted well to a busy household with a mellow dog.

Lincoln is still named Lincoln, while the oldest little girl in the family renamed TJ Mary (which was the name of Abe’s wife, if you recall!), and Minnie is now Minerva, which is a perfectly fitting name for her. It sounds like she’s getting back to her old self, although I’m sure the transition will take longer for her than for her kits. The kittens are having fun with the kids and are used to the dog, who ignores them. The really interesting thing is that both TJ/Mary and Lincoln are back to nursing! The week before they left, Min was not letting anyone nurse – I guess because her spay incision was still tender. I think that’s probably comforting for everyone. So, big relief that everyone is doing fine.

Meanwhile, everything is copacetic down in the villa. Mom Sammy is still eating like she has a lot of catching up to do, and she’s definitely feeling beefier. Sammy really loves to have her head scratched and she’ll let me hold her like a baby and scratch her head and chin for a long time while she coos and wraps her paws around my arm.

The boys are both eating wet food and we assume nursing a little bit. They are both growing well. The maternal comparison between Min and Sammy is so interesting. Sam is not that attentive to the boys – she doesn’t grab them and start grooming them as soon as they come near like Minnie did. She’ll give one a haphazard lick if he gets in her face. Also, we let staff cat, Reggie, meet Sam through the baby gate and they touched noses and were friendly. This is in comparison to Min, who went berserk if she so much as caught a glance of a staff cat through the door – she was incredibly protective of her kittens.

The boys are very funny and goofy. Sam is raising them to be independent, so they don’t interact much with her unless she happens to be laying in their play path, in which case, they’ll climb over her as if she was an immovable obstacle.

Sly is really precocious when it comes to the track ball – he got the concept right away, which is impressive for a kitten his age. They aren’t climbers yet, but Robbie likes to play hide and seek in the milk crates. We’re finishing up their meds for respiratory infection and Sly seems to be over his congestion. A potential adopter is coming to meet them tomorrow – they’re pretty irresistible, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed!
