Running Dry at Vernal Falls
Those specks on the rocks near the base of the falls are people, and that’s a swimmer in the water. Even with the low water flows of late summer, Yosemite’s waterfalls are mesmerizing.
Martha took this shot from the Mist Trail, near the end of our 17-mile round-trip hike from the floor of Yosemite Valley to the Half Dome cables. Unfortunately, it was cloudless and well over 90 degrees all day, and for most of it we had no drinkable mist within reach. Ted nearly collapsed from dehydration before we finally were able to refill our water bottles near the end of the hike.
