Poe came to 50K as the only female in the four-kitten Nanos litter. Like her brothers, she weighed 4 ounces, her eyes were unopened, and her umbilical cord was still attached. She ate well for several days and gained over 2 ounces in weight before developing diarrhea, which we treated with Panacur and Metronidazole.

Despite the meds, Poe's diarrhea persisted. She lost weight, energy, and her appetite while we hand-fed her and gave her saline injections. After spiraling downhill for 48 hours, she died on her 11th day at 50K.

We initially attributed her death to the enervating effects of diarrhea, but when Uno followed the same sad progression even as his diarrhea cleared up, we changed our diagnosis to "fading kitten syndrome", which may have been caused by a systemic bacterial infection.
