fading kitten syndrome
a catch-all term that describes a downhill slide sometimes experienced by apparently healthy young kittens several days after separation from their Mom. Begins with refusal to feed and progresses to lethargy, weight loss, floppy neck and limbs, coma, and death. May frequently be attributable to a systemic bacterial infection that leads to sepsis. Should be treated as soon as symptoms arise (and prophylactically in siblings of affected kittens) with a broad-spectrum antibiotic.
